There hasn’t been an entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise since Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017, making it the longest wait between films in the series to date. Walt Disney Studios isn’t going to forget about one of its most lucrative franchises ever, though, and there are plans for various future pictures.

One rumored offering is a female-led spinoff with Margot Robbie as the lead. There has been no official announcement for this yet, but it appears to still be in progress.

Margot Robbie Touted to Play Lead Role in Movie

According to Jerry Bruckheimer, a Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff with Robbie in the lead roles is still in the works. There have been various rumors about the picture over the last few years, with some reports suggesting that Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson will pen the script.

It seems that all parties including Robbie want the film to happen, but there may be several factors slowing it down behind the scenes. Along with Disney having to decide which Pirates project to prioritize, it may also be difficult to find a time when Robbie is free to shoot. After all, she’s now one of the most sought-after actors in the business.

The Pirates of the Caribbean pictures had a huge effect on the pirate genre in the mainstream since the release of The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow instantly became one of the most beloved characters of all time, and inspired other developers to create pirate-themed content in other media.

One of the best series to emerge thanks to Pirates of the Caribbean was Black Sails, a thrilling adventure that served as a prequel to Treasure Island. There have been countless pirate games released in the last couple of decades as well, with the mobile market one of the best places to experience them. Some of the top offerings include Pirate Kings and King of Sails: Ship Battle.

Pirates have also been prevalent in the online casino industry, and you can even find the genre when you play classic slots.  Seven 7s is a pirate themed offering that features ships and krakens, and it was clearly influenced by the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. With all this pirate content, there’s a massive audience out there waiting for another entry in the swashbuckling series.

Ayo Edebiri Could Star in Separate Spinoff

Along with the Robbie spinoff, there has been talk that Ayo Edebiri could take on a key role in a future Pirates instalment. The 29-year-old found fame in The Bear, and has been identified as someone who would be perfect to play a female version of Jack Sparrow. However, it has been confirmed that if Edebiri does appear in a future film, it will be separate to the Robbie-led offering.

Unfortunately, the wait for a new entry to the Pirates of the Caribbean saga could be much longer. With nothing confirmed, this means that it will be at least two years before another offering. There’s a strong chance that Disney will decide to prioritize the main series reboot before turning their attention to the female-led spinoff.
