Christian Comair is experienced in the supervision of large-scale construction projects, including marine works, renovation schemes, and development of water supply and treatment plants. Having acquired Sofregaz, Kristian Comair rescued the business from bankruptcy, returning it to profitability and conserving the French oil and gas specialist’s workforce. This article will take a closer look at Sofregaz, in particular focusing on its work creating small-scale liquified natural gas (LNG) facilities.
Sofregaz provides a full spectrum of services covering the lifecycle of energy infrastructure projects, from early advisory work and execution to long-term optimization. The company’s activities are structured around four core areas:
- Due diligence and technical assistance, supporting operational plants with expert audits, optimization, revamping, and safety upgrades
- Engineering services, including detailed design, owner’s engineering, and delivering FEED
- Project delivery, managing and supporting procurement, engineering, and construction activities through flexible contracting models tailored to individual projects
- Consultancy and advisory services, providing strategic studies such as feasibility, conceptual design, and permitting
Sofregaz has spearheaded numerous infrastructure development projects over the years, including designing and constructing pipelines, CO2 infrastructure, LNG import terminals, and small-scale LNG facilities. In 2015, Sofregaz completed construction of the Klaipeda LNG reloading station in Lithuania. This small-scale LNG project forms part of the Klaipeda State Seaport at Kiaules Nugara Island. A vital extension of the existing terminal, the Klaipeda LNG reloading station has played a significant role in enhancing Lithuania’s LNG capabilities. The facility is designed to manage various LNG operations, including truck loading, bunkering, unloading from carriers, and LNG storage. The versatile infrastructure supports regional and local LNG distribution, promoting cleaner energy alternatives across the Baltic states.
In 2016, Sofregaz completed construction of an LNG truck loading station at the Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque in northern France. Located at Dunkerque’s West Port, this small-scale LNG facility can accommodate up to 10 LNG trucks daily, providing a flexible solution for transporting LNG by road. Equipped with a fully automated system for truck access, loading, scheduling, and safety management, the station is integral to expanding LNG availability throughout France and Europe and supporting industries that rely on clean, low-emission fuels.
The Melilla Decarbonization Project in Spain is another small-scale LNG development project Sofregaz was proud to participate in. Completed in 2021, the Decarbonization Mililla Project was a forward-thinking initiative designed to reduce the CO2 footprint of Mililla’s local thermal power plants. The project centered around integrating hydrogen and natural gas into the energy mix, presenting a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. A key feature of the project was the development of a new LNG import terminal with a 5,000-cubic-meter storage capacity connected directly to the power plant via a dedicated pipeline. The initiative formed part of a broader strategy to decarbonize local industry and support sustainable energy solutions across the region.
Combining decades of global experience with an expansive portfolio of successfully delivered projects, Sofregaz has earned the trust of clients across multiple continents and industries. Established by Gaz de France in 1959, the company has overseen more than 1,300 projects across 95 countries to date, providing innovative and efficient energy solutions, with its focus extending beyond traditional energy sources to encompass an array of alternative energy solutions.
From natural gas treatment installations, pipelines, and compression stations to LNG import and export terminals, Sofregaz engineers the vision of its clients, transforming their ambitions into reality. Drawing on a wealth of collective expertise across conventional and emerging energies, Sofregaz provides tailored solutions that meet the complex challenges of today while anticipating the needs of tomorrow. The company is committed to delivering excellence at every stage of the projects it participates in, creating energy systems capable of supporting long-term development and providing a firm foundation for progress and advancement.
