People find out what my family does for a living, and the question that follows is almost always the same: is tap water safe to drink? It’s a fair question, and the answer is less black and white than people assume. Most public water in the United States is treated to meet federal standards, and in plenty of homes: it’s perfectly fine straight from the faucet.
The trouble is that “meets the standard” and “what I’d pour for my own kids” aren’t always the same thing, and that gap is where people get stuck. My dad has built filtration systems for decades, and I work alongside that at our family’s company, QMP, so I look at this less like a shopper and more like someone who knows how these systems get made.
So, is tap water safe to drink?
The short version: in most US cities, yes, tap water is safe to drink, because utilities treat it and the EPA caps the levels of dozens of contaminants. The real question is what “safe” means in this context – it just confirms the water met federal limits at the point it was tested, at the treatment plant. That’s not the same as saying it’s free of contaminants, and it says nothing about what could happen to it on the way from the plant to your tap. Old pipes, a private well that nobody regulates, or a local pollution event can all change the quality of your water. The actual question you need to ask is how safe is my (italicized) water. So the more useful question is whether yours is.
What’s actually in your tap water
Tap water contaminants tend to fall into a handful of groups, and knowing which groups gives you an understanding of how to decide if your water is actually safe. Public systems test for around 90 substances, but the ones that come up most often with homeowners look like this:

Here’s the frustrating part: most of these tap water chemicals are colorless and have no taste. Water contamination doesn’t announce itself, so a clear glass tells you almost nothing about what’s dissolved in it.
Why most filters do less than people think
This is where people get tripped up: grabbing a filter feels like solving the problem, but a lot of the popular ones are really there to make water taste better, not to make it safer. The pitcher in your fridge is usually a carbon filter, and carbon is good at removing chlorine, only improving taste. It does far less against dissolved metals or the other tap water contaminants people are actually worried about.
When the lifestyle and wellness brand Poosh interviewed me about filtered water a few years ago, I kept landing on the same point: “The problem is contact time. Water needs to go through multiple stages of filtration to effectively remove heavy metals, fluoride, and bacteria.”
Contact time is the part nobody puts on the box. One quick pass through a single cartridge can’t do what several stages do, and a filter that never gets swapped can start growing bacteria of its own. A cheap filter and a filtration system are not the same purchase, even when the packaging borrows the same words.
The part most filter brands won’t mention
From where I sit on the manufacturing side, most companies that sell water filters don’t actually manufacture them. They assemble parts made somewhere else, usually overseas, fit them into a housing, and sell the result as American. It’s legal, and it’s worth knowing about, because where a part is made shapes how the water is filtered.
That’s the difference with how my dad, Freddy Vidal, set up QMP. He’s an inventor with several US patents who spent years building filtration products for brands like GE and Home Depot before focusing on our own line. We mold our own housings, machine our own components, and build the cartridges and faucets in-house, here in the States. That kind of vertical manufacturing is uncommon, and it’s the reason we can stand behind American-made water filtration systems rather than attach our name to someone else’s hardware.
Owning the manufacturing means owning the materials, the tolerances, and what happens when something needs fixing. A housing molded from quality American material behaves differently than a thin imported shell, and if you ever wondered what a water filter is really made of, the materials are exactly where the cheaper end of the market cuts corners.
Price tends to track all of this, which is why a twenty-dollar pitcher and a built-in system were never doing the same job. A well-made reverse osmosis system is more of an investment, often starting in the high hundreds once you account for the stages and installation, and the bargain end of the market exists because it’s mostly selling better taste, with little protection behind it.
How to find out if your water is safe
You don’t have to guess. Every public utility has to publish an annual water quality report, also called a Consumer Confidence Report, and it lists what’s in your water and at what levels. You can usually get yours from your provider or through the EPA’s drinking water resources. When it comes to drinking water safety, that report is your starting point. If you’re on a well, no report exists for you, so a home test kit or a certified lab matters more, since it tells you what’s truly coming out of your tap instead of leaving you to assume.

Read your report, test if you’re unsure, and if you decide to filter, look hard at who actually built the thing, because that’s the part that holds up.
