TikTok Phenomenon Drives ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ Movie Sales

The movie ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ recently hit box office records and was helped by a Minions-themed TikTok video.

Over the 4-day opening weekend the latest Despicable Me franchise film garnered approximately $125 million and $93.7 million in domestic ticket and international ticket sales, respectively.

However, it can be argued that part of the film’s success was a TikTok trend where people put on a suit when going to theaters and sharing their rowdy clips on the social media platform. These videos use the hashtag #gentleminions and have been trending on TikTok ever since.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, nearly ninety percent of the audience who watched ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ were aged 25 and below, and 25 percent of viewers were younger than 12 years. In some of the TikTok videos, the suited viewers threw bananas, shouted at the screen and made Minion sounds.

‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ is now open in theaters worldwide.
