Do you know a security red flag when you see one? As a small business owner, you need to be able to spot them from a mile off. After all, the more red flags you’ve got waving around on a daily basis, the harder it’s going to be to keep your business safe.
Security is the name of the game in the small business world, and you can be a target for a hack simply because you don’t know any better. Getting above the challenge is crucial to working well in the long term.
So, where are the red flags set up in your business? Let’s take a quick walk through your premises and see if we can spot any.
Only a Few People are Using Two Factor Authentication
It might feel like a personal choice someone can make, but if you’re running a business and your employees aren’t helping to keep up the security, that’s a red flag.
And if you have a two or three factor authentication system available on your network, everyone needs to be using it. Otherwise there’s a weak link in the chain, and your security is only ever going to be as strong as that weak link really is.
Make sure a company wide memo goes round about two factor authentication, and how everyone needs to get it set up by the end of the week. Of course, make sure there’s help available to anyone who doesn’t know how to set it up, but be firm here!
There’s a Lack of Access Verification
Who’s in the office right now? How would you check to be sure? A simple headcount, maybe? If so, you’re running with a red flag in hand.
After all, if you can’t be sure who’s in your building at any time, you’re not as secure as you really need to be.
There needs to be a stronger access verification system at work within your operation. You need to know who’s in, who’s off, and whether or not someone should really be there.
Look into a more robust video management system for this, as it’s best to have a real-time feed on the go around your entry points.
You’re Not Sure About Current Security Practices
When was the last time you got any training over the best security practices in the modern business world? It might have been when you last worked for someone else, and that could have been two to three years ago at this point!
And if you haven’t received any security training, neither have your employees. Fix that as soon as you’re able to.
You don’t want your team operating without knowing how to spot scams in their inbox, or how to identify fake websites. Keep everyone in the loop and you can close and lock that loop behind you!
For small business owners, some red flags are easier to spot than others, but it’s these hidden red flags you need to know about!
